ロンドン《Saki, London》

イギリスのロンドンに住み始めて、数年経ちました。

ようやく慣れてきたとはいえ、いまだに驚くことが沢山あります。

不思議なロンドンを少しずつですが紹介できたらなと思います。

 

さて、ロンドンに来てまず驚いたのは、いろんな人種の人が住んでいることです。

町を歩いていても、英語以外の言語が飛び交っています。

それもそのはず、ロンドンに住む白人の英国人は約45%と半数以下。

50以上の民族や異なる文化背景を持つ人たちが暮らし、300を超える言語が使われています。（Wiki調べ）

日本だと想像できませんね。でも、外国人としてロンドンにすむ私には、この多様な社会が日本人の私も居ていいんだよといってくれているような気がしたりします。

実際、ロンドンで下手な英語を話しても、日ごろからいろんな訛りのある英語に慣れているせいか比較的理解してくれます。

 

それでも、ずっとアメリカ英語で勉強してきたので、イギリス英語は未だに難しいです。

同じ英語なのに使う単語も少しずつ違います。

たとえば、野菜のズッキーニ。

アメリカ英語ではそのままzucchini（ズッキーニ）ですが、イギリスではcourgette（コージェット）・・・・なんか無駄にオシャレな感じですよね。

 

さらに、セーターは、jumper（ジャンパー）で、スニーカーはtrainers（トレイナーズ）と、わけが分からなくなってきます・・・。

 

ところが、、大都市ロンドンには日本人が約38,000人も住んでおり、日本食材店やレストラン、そして日系の病院まであり、英語が話せなくてもどうにかなってしまいます。

そんなわけで、なかなか英語は上達しませんが、毎日楽しく過ごしています。

 

では、長くなってしまったのでこの辺で。

 

最後に、長かった冬がようやく終わり天気の良い日が続くロンドンの写真を。

 少し肌寒くても、太陽が見えたら外に出て日光浴したくてたまらないのがロンドナーです。　公園でランチを食べるビジネスマンや水着で芝生に寝転がる人も沢山います。

短い夏をみんな思い思いに過ごしています。

Several years has past since I had moved to London.

I'm still getting used to life in London slowly,but I still encounter many surprising things.

So I would like to introduce you to this "Wonderland, called London".

 

First of all, I was surprised that many people who live in London were multiracial.

So many languages fly back and forth in the city.

It is no wonder that London is so multicultural because  only less than 45% white British live  here.

There are over 50 races and different cultures living together and also people use over more than 300 different languages.　(quote from Wiki)

We can not imagine the same situation in Japan!!!

However I feel like I can stay here even though I am foreigner because of this great diversity.

  

In fact, people  kindly understand my poor English here in London better  than people in other areas of UK.

This is because people here are used to hearing many types of spoken English with strong accents.

However I am still struggling with using British English.

 I think American English is easier to understand for many Japanese because we learned it at school.

Between British English and American English, they use different words which have the same meaning.

For examples,the vegetable " Zucchini ".

In the US, they say "Zucchini" the same as in Japan.

 In the UK, it's courgette. 

And courgette sounds more elegant to me but meaningless.

In addition,　"sweater" is "Jumper" in the UK and also "sneaker" is "trainers". 

 These differences confused me a lot.

British English is very difficult for me but I can survive  without it.

Over 38,000 Japanese live in London and there are Japanese food shops, Japanese restaurants, Japanese clinics and even karaoke boxes.

 So we don't need to speak English, actually.

That is why my English has not improved but I enjoy London life!

Finally, I've uploaded a picture of London with beautiful weather.

Even it's still chilly, Londoners prefer to going out and bathe in the sun when the sun shows up.

We can see businessmen eating lunch in the parks and people　wearing bikinis relaxing on the　lawn.

People in London spend time in their own way in the short summer.
